Historical World Health Organization Pandemic Agreement 2025 - What changes & The role of Biocontainment

On May 20, 2025, the World Health Organization announced a historic agreement: 124 member states signed a new international treaty to strengthen pandemic preparedness and response. This is the first binding document of its kind adopted after the COVID-19 crisis, marking a turning point in global health cooperation.

🌍 A New Global Pact to Face Future Pandemics

The so-called “Pandemic Agreement” is the result of three years of negotiations and consultations. It has one clear objective: to prevent the world from being unprepared in the face of new global health emergencies.

Key points include:

• Rapid sharing of pathogen data (through the PABS system – Pathogen Access and Benefit-Sharing)
• Fair distribution of vaccines, tests, and treatments, especially to low-income countries
• Strengthening local health systems and epidemiological surveillance
• Respect for national sovereignty: the agreement does not grant WHO the authority to enforce lockdowns or mandatory vaccinations
